SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCBD) – A Summerville mother told News 2 that over the weekend when she was cooking dinner, a man hid in the bushes with his pants unzipped and was speaking to her children.
Summerville resident Kristin Blake said that the incident happened on Sunday in the Bridges of Summerville neighborhood while the children were playing in their backyard.
Blake said she knew something was wrong when she saw her children looking through the fence of their backyard.
“When I yelled to them ‘what are you doing?’ they said ‘we’re talking to the man’ and I said ‘what man, the neighbor?’ they said ‘no mommy, we’re talking to the man in the bushes.’”
Immediately, Blake got her children inside and asked her husband to go outside. He then pulled the man out of the bushes. He appeared to be intoxicated and claimed he was looking for his girlfriend, according to Blake.
The Summerville Police Department responded and the man was apprehended.
Blake said she wants parents to learn from the incident and talk to their kids about strangers.
“Talk to your kids,” she said. “You have to talk to them about strangers. Kids are innocent, mine are three and five, they don’t understand. They are extremely friendly. You need to have a conversation until they understand.”
She added that she spoke with her children about talking to strangers just hours before the incident happened.
“My kids still didn’t listen so to any parent out there, my advice would be talk to your kids over and over and over,” she said.
Due to the Presidents Day holiday, the Summerville Police Department was not able to provide any information about the incident on Monday and could not confirm if the man is facing any charges.
