DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A toddler who went missing Tuesday afternoon was later found dead in the family’s swimming pool.

The Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office was joined by multiple law enforcement agencies from across the tri-county as they searched for a three-year-old child who went missing off Kette Creek Road just before 5:00 p.m.

Lt. Rick Carson with the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office said the child was reported to have been missing 15 to 20 minutes when 9-1-1 was called.

Deputies later announced the child was found dead in the family swimming pool at 9:47 p.m. after the pool was drained by search and rescue crews.

The sheriff’s office on Thursday said the pool was one of the first places they checked and utilized divers, along with a nearby pond. “It was very difficult for the divers to maneuver or see in the pool,” said Lt. Carson.

He said the large pool was extremely overgrown, filled with black water and had thick, wiry algae. “It was not until the pool was almost drained that rescuers and searchers observed the child at the deep end.”

Dorchester County Fire Rescue, Dorchester County EMS, Charleston County Sheriff’s Office K-9 and Air 1, South Carolina DNR, and an FBI task force joined in the search.

An investigation by the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office and the Dorchester County Coroner’s Office is underway. An autopsy will take place at MUSC on Friday morning.
