SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) – Authorities in Summerville responded to reports of a shooting at the Planter’s Retreat Apartments around 6:00 p.m. Sunday.
According to an incident report, the victim of the shooting had already been transported to an area hospital by EMS and a suspect had been detained by the time officers arrived.
The report states the shooting happened in the breezeway of the 3rd floor of building D. That is where officers were able to locate a number of brass shell casings on the ground in front of apartment 304.
The victim’s sister, Shaniqua Mack, who was in apartment 302, told officers her nephew came to the apartment to get his mom about a boy in apartment 304 attempting to fight him – Mack’s sister reportedly went to the apartment to confront the boy’s mother about what her son told her, and that is when an argument took place.
Mack told officers she stepped in the middle to break up the argument since her children were present. But the report states the woman from 304 went back into her apartment and came out with black and silver handgun and began waving it around while arguing with her sister.
Mack stated her sister was facing the woman from apartment 304 when the gun went off. The sister reportedly went back inside the apartment and she saw that she had been shot in the chest.
In the report, Mack stated the woman who shot her sister went back inside apartment 304 before coming back out into the breezeway and heading down stairs to the parking lot. She said the female then got into a silver Mazda sedan and attempted to leave.
That’s when Mack said she started taking pictures of the vehicle and the woman got out and went back upstairs to her apartment. Mack stated some other people came out of apartment 304 and got into a Black GMC Yukon and a red pickup which she was unable to get a picture of.
Upon examining the victim, investigators determined the gunshot entered the right side of her chest and exited through the right side of her back.
The victim provided a description of the suspect who was located at the scene and detained.
Officers charged Jessica Shantelle Gourdine with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and possession of a firearm during a violent crime. An affidavit shows Gourdine admitted to grabbing and discharging the gun during an argument.
