Driver arrested for DUI after striking, injuring bicyclist on King Street

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Charleston Police on Monday announced the arrest of a DUI suspect involved in a collision with a bicyclist on King Street over the weekend.

According to Charles Francis with the Charleston Police Department, the driver of a 2012 Subaru Impreza was traveling north on King Street near Sheppard Street and Engel Street when it struck a bicyclist – also heading north – around 9:00 p.m. Sunday.

The bicyclist sustained a serious injury in the collision and was rushed to the Medical University of South Carolina where they remain in critical condition.

King Street was closed to all traffic for nearly three hours while investigators collected evidence and towed the vehicle involved in the crash.

The driver of the Subaru, Gabriela Bennett of Mount Pleasant, was arrested for felony driving under the influence after she showed signs of impairment during a field sobriety test following the crash.
