BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCBD) – An error on your tax bill in Berkeley County means some residents will be paying slightly less than they were supposed to.
A clerical error in the fire fees resulted in about $48,000 less being billed to taxpayers. Officials say it would cost the county more to fix the problem than to just live with the error this year.
There were multiple fire fee formulas being shared by county officials. The formula that was passed by council was different than the one given to the tax auditor’s office.
The bills will net the county fire departments about $48,000 less. It would cost about $52,000 to resend the correct bills, a net loss of $4,000 to the taxpayers.
Instead, County Council decided to just use the formula with the error for this year.
Goose Creek Rural Fire Department Chief Bob Maybaugh says even with the error, the new fire fee still results in departments being given significantly more money than last year.
Chief Maybaugh said they’re expecting the correct calculations will be used for the fire fees next year.
