Family settles lawsuit after man burns, dies at Kapstone Paper plant

Local News

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCBD) – It’s being called one of the largest wrongful death lawsuits in recent memory.

The deal comes more than two years after the death of Brian Allen, who worked at Kapstone Paper in North Charleston.

A fire broke out and left him with severe burns. He suffered for eight months before he died.

Allen’s wife sued some of Kapstone’s suppliers after gasoline was detected in tanks that normally contained non-flammable materials.

The paper manufacture was not a defendant in the case.

Now, the attorney for the Allen family, James Payne, released a statement for the family, saying in part: “This resolution will allow Kristie and the rest of the family to put the litigation behind them and try to focus on the positive memories of Brian as best as they can.”
