After meetings and discussions, Charleston County Council voted to move one step closer to easing traffic in one section of Mt. Pleasant.
The finance committee approved $200,000 in funding to add one lane to highway 41. The new lane would run from Bessemer Road to Highway 17. This would be an immediate fix to help alleviate traffic on the busy road.
The Charleston County Transportation Development and town have held several forums about this Highway 41 Corridor Improvements project and opened it up for public comment.
The goals for these improvements:
- Improve capacity along the corridor
- Improve safety for bicyclists, pedestrians and commuters
- Provide improved capacity at the intersection of Highway 41 and U.S. 17
- Complete the Gregorie Ferry Road connector.
Thursday’s vote is only the first step, the full council still needs to approve the decision. They will discuss that next Tuesday.
