CHARLESTON, SC (WCBD) – Florence intensified into a category one hurricane late Sunday morning. The hurricane hunters sent back data confirming 75 mph sustained winds within the storm.
Florence is expected to rapidly intensify over the next 24 to 48 hours, becoming a category 3 storm on Tuesday and continuing to strengthen into a category four storm mid week.
Hurricane force winds extend out 15 miles from the center while tropical storm for winds extend out 115 miles.
As of the 11 AM update, the storm was 750 miles southeast of Bermuda and 610 miles northeast of the Northern Leeward Islands. Florence is moving west at around 6 mph and maintain that speed through Sunday. An increase in pace as well as a slight turn to the west-northwest is expected on Monday.
Florence is expected to near the East Coast of the US on Thursday as a powerful category 3 or 4 storm. The differences in the models means it’s too early to tell exactly where along the east coast the storm impacts. Anywhere from Northern Florida to Virginia needs to pay attention and monitor the forecast closely.
