GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD)- A Georgetown County Detention Center correctional officer is facing charges after investigators say she had a sexual relationship with an inmate.

36-year-old Kimberly Gibbs is charged with Sexual Misconduct with an Inmate, Misconduct in Office, Furnishing Contraband to an Inmate, and Obstructing Justice.

The investigation started after Georgetown County Airport Officials found a cell phone in the ceiling of a bathroom in one of the hangars, believed to be placed in the ceiling by an inmate worker assigned to the airport. A second cell phone was found in an area outside the hangar.

The inmate initially denied any knowledge about the cell phone, but later in the day took responsibility for both cell phones. During the investigation, one of the cell phones received an incoming message from Officer Gibbs’ cell phone while she was at work.

Investigators say the inmate involved cooperated with the investigation and admitted to a relationship with Officer Gibbs. Investigators say they learned Gibbs and the inmate performed sexual acts on multiple occasions within the detention center. They say Gibbs received the cell phones in the mail and would leave them for the inmate in a preplanned location at the airport and she was compensated electronically for doing so.

Georgetown County Sheriff’s Deputies interrogated Gibbs and say she admitted to the majority of the allegations. She was arrested is currently in the Georgetown County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing. She has worked for the Detention Center since March 2015 and was terminated upon her arrest.

This case is still under investigation.
