HANAHAN, SC (WCBD) – Hanahan Middle School was placed under temporary lockdown Wednesday afternoon while officers with the Hanahan Police Department were pursuing a suspect in the area.
A text alert went out to parents after 2:30 p.m. saying, “As a precaution to ensure student safety, Hanahan Middle has been placed on lockdown. Law enforcement is pursuing a suspect in the area.”
Berkeley County School District’s spokeswoman, Katie Orvin echoed that message in an email to News 2.
Orvin said within a few minutes, school officials were advised by law enforcement that it was safe to lift the lockdown and resume normal operations.
Parents were also informed the lockdown was lifted.
Capt. Michael Fowler with the Hanahan Police Dept. said officers were pursuing a suspect on foot near the back of the school at the time.
A school resource officer placed the school on an administrative lockdown as a precaution.
Officers conducted a thorough search of the area in assistance with the North Charleston Police Department.
