Hutchinson Square renovations to minimally impact upcoming Summerville events

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) - As renovations continue on Hutchinson Square in Summerville, the construction is expected to impact some upcoming fall events.

The square is a popular venue for events like the upcoming Sweet Tea Festival, Third Thursdays and the Christmas tree lighting in December.

Town officials said that they have made some adjustments to event permits because of the renovations.

"There just had to be some changes with locations and dates," said Mary Edwards, the public information officer for the town.

Summerville DREAM plans several events that happen in the square. Planners with the nonprofit group told News 2 that the renovations will affect the aesthetic of events as well as result in a little less parking and less space.

"They've actually expanded the square footage of the park itself," said Molly Willard, Director of Promotions and Design for Summerville DREAM. "They had to redo a water main line out there so they put two new fire hydrants and it kind of envelopes some of the parking spaces so I have to adjust with the amount of space that I actually have."

The next planned event happening on Hutchinson Square is the Sweet Tea Festival. It begins on Sep. 20 at 4 p.m.
