CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)- As the Lowcountry prepares for the impacts of Tropical Storm Ian, local officials are making sand and sandbags available for residents.

Pickup Locations

Berkeley County

Self-serve sandbags are now available at the following locations:

  • Hanahan- Railroad Ave (in front of Field #1 behind Trident Technical College)
  • First Street near the railroad tracks (behind Moncks Corner Fire Department headquarters)Moncks Corner

Sandbags are available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. Shovels are available on site.

Folly Beach

Sandbags will be available to Folly Beach residents beginning on Wednesday at 9 a.m. at Public Safety (106 W. Cooper Street)

Once available, each resident will be limited to 10 bags; A load of sand will be delivered to the boat landing on Wednesday and residents will be able to start filling at 1 p.m.

City of Charleston

The city will have a limited number of free sand and bags available for residents beginning Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Residents should bring their own shovels for assembly. Staff will be on-site to assist, as needed.

  • Bee’s Landing Recreation Center, 1580 Ashley Garden Boulevard (West Ashley)
  • Hampton Park parking lot on the corner of Ashley Avenue and Mary Murray Drive (peninsula)
  • Seven Farms Drive behind Governor’s Park Dog Park, Under I-526 (Daniel Island)
  • Grace Bridge Street parking lot between America and East Bay streets (peninsula)

There is a limit of 10 sandbags per residence.

James Island

The city will have a limited number of free sand and bags available for residents beginning Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Residents should bring their own shovels for assembly. Staff will be on-site to assist, as needed.

  • James Island Town Hall, 1122 Dills Bluff Road (James Island)

There is a limit of 10 sandbags per residence

North Charleston

The City of North Charleston will have a limited number of sandbags available for residents beginning Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.

  • North Charleston Athletic Center, 5600 Casper Padgett Way
  • North Charleston Aquatics Center, 8610 Patriot Boulevard

Proof of residency will be required to pick up sandbags (businesses are not permitted).

There is a limit of 6 sandbags per residence

Isle of Palms

The City of Isle of Palms will give out sandbags to residents on a first-come, first-served basis beginning Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. at the Municipal Parking Lot (1116 Pavillion Drive).

Mount Pleasant

The Town of Mount Pleasant will distribute sand and sandbags to residents beginning Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. until supplies last.

  • Memorial Waterfront Park, 71 Harry Hallman Boulevard
  • R.L. Jones Center, 391 Egypt Road
  • Park West Recreation Complex, 1251 Park West Boulevard

There is a limit of 10 sandbags per residence

Colleton County

Sandbag operations will take place Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. They will not be available on Friday, September 30.

  • Colleton County Fire-Rescue Headquarters, 113 Mable T. Willis Boulevard.

Residents will be responsible for filling and loading their own sandbags.

Dorchester County

Sandbag locations will open Thursday, September 29, 2022, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. There is a limit of ten sandbags per resident or business owner. Bring your shove to fill bags yourself. The county will only provide sand and bags.

Georgetown County

The City of Georgetown will offer self-serve sandbags beginning Thursday, Sept. 29 from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. There will be on-site assistance available if needed.

  • Old City Hall, 120 N. Fraser Street

There is a limit of 10 sandbags per individual

There is a potential for county pickup sites to run out of free sandbags and sand ahead of the storm. Here’s where you can buy them:
