Local church spends weekend cleaning up trash in downtown Charleston

DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCBD) – A local congregation teamed up with the City of Charleston this weekend to clean up trash in downtown Charleston.

Soda cans, an old mattress and scrap metal were just some of the things picked up by members of the World Mission Society Church of God on Sunday.

Church organizers say that this is just one of the many days of service they have planned for the Charleston area.

“I was impressed with the amount of work that we were able to come up with here,” said Cody Marsh, one of the volunteers. “Sometimes, when we do environmental clean-ups, we just find little bits of trash, gum wrappers, and maybe candy wrappers. Today, we were able to have a good experience.”

Marsh said they collected everything from mirrors to lawn chairs, grills and even microwaves.

“We are thankful to have a great work load to clean up,” they said. “It’s great because we can really see and feel the results that we are putting into the community.”

Organizers of the clean-up say that the volunteers picked up 89 bags of trash.
