Charleston, SC (WCBD) – Now that Florence has passed, victims need lots of supplies. The Lowcountry Truckers organization is collecting donations to give to those in need in North Carolina. This is just the latest effort to give back to the community from the Lowcountry Truckers in memory of one of their own.

Randy Smalls is helping to organize the effort. “I’m part of a little group called Lowcountry Truckers and we do a lot of stuff for the community.”

They have put together a drive to fill a 20 foot box truck with water, toiletries and other supplies that might be needed. They are collecting items to take to the Florence victims in Wilmington, North Carolina. You can donate at JJs Sports Bar in Russellville, or Rosetta’s Soul Food restaurant in Moncks Corner.

Smalls says, “It’s important to me because I was raised up in the church. I feel like it’s better to give than to receive. We’re on the giving side of this whole situation. I feel like now is the time to stand up as a community, as a state and help another state out.”

Lowcountry Truckers formed in Pineville a couple of years ago, but about a year ago Travis White, a fellow trucker, died. They decided to look for ways to help the community as a way to keep Travis’ memory alive. “He was a good fella. he took care of his children, he loved his kids. We took the love that he had for his children and his community, we got together and said, ‘Let’s do everything we do in memory of him.’ Today is actually his birthday… so it’s actually one of the perfect days to do what we’re doing now.”

If you would like to donate something you can do that at Rosetta’s Soul Food restaurant in Moncks Corner or at JJ’s sports bar in Russellville. They will be taking these donations until Friday. The truck will be driven up to North Carolina early Saturday morning.
