Charleston Police have charged a 39-year-old man with unlawful conduct towards a child after they say he left a baby inside a car while ordering food from a local restaurant.

Officers were called to the Folly Road Kickin Chicken Sunday afternoon after someone reported seeing the baby unattended. A witness told officers the child appeared to have been left alone for about 10 minutes.

The responding officer attempted to make entry into the vehicle and that is when a man, later identified as Pernell Blake, approached him saying the car and child was his.

The officer entered the vehicle and attempted to wake the child up by tapping on her chest and lifting her arm up, but the baby was unresponsive.

EMS evaluated the child and said she at first appeared lethargic and unresponsive, but then perked up and was considered to be in good health.

The child’s mother, Heather Blake, was called to the seen to take custody of the child.

Pernell Blake was charged with unlawful conduct towards a child and transported to the Al Cannon Detention Center.
