Man dead following officer involved shooting on Johns Island

JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD)– The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office says one man is dead following an officer-involved shooting on the 1100 block of Waldon C. Jones Rd. 

The man has been identified as 24-year-old Joseph Dawson, according to Charleston County Deputy Coroner Dottie Lindsay.

Deputies say they received a call about a man threatening to use his weapon against his wife and her associates. The man’s wife then hid at a nearby property. 

Captain Antonio with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Department says a physical alteration broke out when deputies attempted to to confront him. They say the man brandished his weapon during a physical fight which then transitioned to a ground struggle. The man then allegedly fired one shot at deputies. Another deputy returned fire, striking and killing the man.

The deputies performed CPR on the man before he died.

No other individuals were harmed and the firearm was recovered. SLED is investigating the incident and the deputies involved are on administrative leave with pay, as per protocol.

According to  Charleston County Consolidated Dispatch, deputies responded to a call for a disturbance shortly after 10 this morning.
