Man dies after auto-pedestrian accident on Folly Beach

A James Island resident who was reportedly lying in the roadway has died after being struck by a car, early on Saturday morning.

The Folly Beach Department of Public Safety (DPS) received a 911 call about the accident at 12:59 a.m. and responded to the 1300 block of East Ashley Avenue.

The motorist attempted to swerve before striking the man, according to information released by the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, then stopped and notified authorities.

When officers arrived on scene, 10 minutes after the call, they found a man lying in the road with fatal injuries.

The vehicle that struck the man was operating as a Lyft ride-sharing trip. Both the driver and passenger in the vehicle said the man was lying in the road and appeared to be alive before the accident happened.

According to a press release issued by Folly Beach DPS, the driver was not determined to be impaired and was released on scene. No charges have been filed against the driver.
