Memorial Day Driving Tips

Local News

Charleston, S.C. (WCBD)- As the unofficial start to summer, a record 37.6 six million travelers are expected to hit the road for Memorial Day weekend.

Count on 2’s Temple Ricke spoke with Lance Corporal Matt Southern who explains that safety starts in your driveway; before hitting the road, make sure your vehicle is in good condition. He suggests checking your tires, fluids, wiper blades, and making sure you had a good night’s sleep.

State Troopers will be out in full force to keep the roads as safe as possible and they want your help! They’re reminding drivers to buckle up, drive the speed limit, limit distractions inside the vehicle, and by not drinking and driving.

Trooper Southern explains, “With your help we can reduce crashes, and if we reduce crashes then we can reduce fatalities. There were 8 people killed last year during the Memorial Day weekend holiday. 8 is not an acceptable number, one is not an acceptable number so we need everyone working together doing what they’re supposed to be doing”.

He adds that if you see something, say something by calling *HP or *47.
