MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD) – Mount Pleasant is one step closer to banning plastic bags and foam containers.

The town’s Police, Legal and Judicial Committee and Economic Development Committee both voted to approve the ban yesterday.

At the town council meeting on Mar. 13, the entire town council will hear the first reading on the ordinance to ban the bags. The ordinance needs two readings to pass.

Mayor Will Haynie says there has been a lot of support and little opposition to the ban.

“Both the Mount Pleasant Chamber of Commerce and the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce were told to alert all of their members who are in business in Mount Pleasant to see if there was any push back on this and there was none,” said Mayor Haynie.

If the ban is passed, it will not take effect for a year.
