Mount Pleasant’s Waterfront Park Pier expansion in the works

Local News

MOUNT PLEASANT (WCBD)  Tuesday, the Mount Pleasant Town Council’s Finance Committee discussed potentially extending the Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park pier.

Right now, the town is deciding between two options: adding docks to the pier or adding different amenities to the park. The town spent nearly $700,000 studying the pier to determine if the extension is necessary.

Adding docks would create space for visitors to park their boats and also create easy access for first responders to get to our waterways.

The committee also considered adding amenities like a restaurant, a dog park or a splash pad and more parking to the waterfront park instead.

The pier discussion triggered two motions, which both failed with a tie.

The first motion was to implement the pier. Tom O’Rourke and Gary Santos were in favor, and Kathy Landing and Joe Bustos were against it. The second motion to not implement the pier portion also failed. Tom O’Rourke and Gary Santos  were against it,  and Kathy Landing and Joe Bustos were in favor.

The discussion will be continued at the Town Council Meeting next Tuesday and come to the full elected body without a recommendation from the committee.
