Nine offshore drilling permits for Atlantic Coast are being processed

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The fight to stop offshore drilling along the Atlantic Coast is not over yet.

Congressman Joe Cunningham on Wednesday confirmed seismic testing permits are still being issued.

Despite Interior Secretary David Bernhardt’s announcements last week that plans to expand offshore oil and gas drilling had been ‘indefinitely postponed’, offshore oil and gas drilling was still on the table.

During a National Resources Committee hearing this week, Bernhardt confirmed that his office is processing nine seismic testing permits – all are for the Atlantic and in various stages of processing.

Cunningham asked Bernhardt if there was a legal impediment to stop his office from developing a leasing plan. In response, Bernhardt no and stated: “I have until 2022 to get a new plan in place. I have some time, so I’m going to figure out what I’m going to do and then I’ll do it.”
