Parent scrambles to find new day care after North Mount Pleasant facility anticipates closure

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCBD) -- New mom Kara Griffin enrolled her son at The Children’s Center at Carolina Park before he was even born.

“Everybody had warned us that daycare here is very competitive, so get your name on a list,” Griffin said.

Griffin was planning on returning to work after maternity leave next week. But, she said on July 22, she received a letter from The Children’s Center at Carolina Park. It said the center would be closing August 15, 2018, or possibly sooner.

“Panic mode just kind of set in, because we don't have any other options lined up,” Griffin said.

Griffin says she called and visited other Mount Pleasant day care facilities to find a spot for her 4-month-old.

"It's kind of, ‘We'll get you in when we can get you in,’ but there's one place that I visited that has a 3 year wait list,” Griffin said.

Griffin also says each waiting list comes with a fee.

The Children’s Center at Carolina Park’s Director, Chris Marino, explained in the letter to parents that staffing challenges have affected the business. Marino also explains Charleston County School District’s Pre-K program has affected enrollment.

Marino says partners have reached out to competing school owners and directors trying to find jobs for employees and space for children. Additionally, parents will receive a refund for fees paid.
