NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)- A post on social media has parents of students at Garrett Academy of Technology in an uproar.
The pictures show dead rats on the floor of a classroom, some rats are in traps, others are just on the floor.
Community activists are trying to bring attention to the issue. The pictures are said to have been sent to an activist from a teacher inside the school. They were posted on Facebook and have been shared hundreds of time.
“I mean, parents, children, everybody really started coming forward and talking about their experiences. We had children saying there were rodents running around in classrooms, even the cafeteria. Basically our story was corroborated by children who attend the school and also by parents who have heard their kids say the same,” said activist Johnathan Thrower.
Thrower said he’ll be bringing the issue up at the next Charleston County School District meeting.
CCSD did release a statement about the issue:
“The photos being shared on social media of rodents, were taken at Garrett High School on/about August 22nd, 2018. The traps in the photo were set in one classroom and disposed of by a school staff members who didn’t inform the District’s facilities and maintenance office of the issue.
Certified pest control specialists have been and are visiting the school 3-5 times per week; and today, staff have requested an inspection from the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) to validate the condition of the food service area.
The health, wellness, and safety of CCSD students and staff is of the upmost importance, and district officials are committed to doing all that they can to address the issue at Garrett.”
