Plans move forward for memorial garden honoring Emanuel AME shooting victim

Local News

Charleston, SC (WCBD) – A memorial garden to remember 87-year-old Susie Jackson, the oldest victim of the 2015 shooting at Mother Emanuel AME Church, is moving ahead.

Charleston City Councilman William Dudley Gregorie confirmed Charleston County Council approved an agreement on Tuesday with the City of Charleston which will give the city the right to maintain, construct, and design the “Susie Jackson Freedom Memorial Garden.”

The county will still own the land.

Jackson was killed along with eight others during that shooting. The memorial garden will be located in the back corner of the Charleston County Library’s land in downtown Charleston.
