Safety tips for frying a turkey this Thanksgiving

Local News

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCBD) – Are you planning on frying your turkey this Thanksgiving holiday? The southern tradition, though delicious, can come with some dangers.

The Mount Pleasant Fire Department wants to remind you to be careful this holiday while cooking those birds and offered some helpful tips.

“Fried turkey is a great tradition enjoyed by many over the holidays, but the danger of mixing water, oil and water can turn a great family celebration into a tragedy,” said John Poole of the Mt. Pleasant Fire Marshal Division in a video Tuesday. “Always remember to read the directions before using a fryer and avoid these costly mistakes.”

  • Don’t overfill the pot.
  • Don’t use a frozen turkey to save some time. Always thaw it out.
  • Never fry indoors
  • Always have an extinguisher nearby

If there is a grease fire, never try to put it out with water.
