A class project at Sangaree Elementary brings the Empire State to the Lowcountry.
Teacher Ali Little and Emily Thompson’s first grade classes have constructed a replica of New York City using boxes. The project took three weeks to build.
The students have been learning about NYC since January, working on reading, writing, math, science, and social studies standards with a NYC twist. Students researched sites around New York City to create informational stories. If you scan QR codes around the replica city, videos of the students’ research will come up.
Guest speakers visited the classrooms as well, including a historic preservationist who helped students compare and contrast old buildings in Charleston with those in NYC.
