SC Highway Patrol searching for vehicle following fatal hit-and-run

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) - The South Carolina Highway Patrol is searching for a driver who left the scene of a fatal collision in Berkeley County late Tuesday.

The crash happened around 11:30 p.m. on Highway 402 near Moncks Corner.  Alan Lane Smith Jr., 31, of Cordesville was struck by a car while riding his motorcycle, according to Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury.

Smith was pronounced dead on the scene by Coroner Salisbury. 

The Highway Patrol identified the SUV driver and her three passengers were not hurt, according to investigators.

The Highway Patrol says a driver trying to make a left turn into a driveway collided with a motorcycle heading the opposite direction. The person trying to make the turn drove away.

The accident is under investigation by the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.  Mr. Smith was wearing a helmet and his death has been ruled accidental.
