SCE&G warns customers about new scam promising $1,000 refund

Local News

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – SCE&G is warning customers about some misinformation that is being shared across social media, via phone calls and through text messages.

They say the scam falsely suggests that there is a $1,000 refund available to customers who call a specific phone number to claim their refund. Beware: the number is 877-432-3808.

SCE&G said that information is misleading and incorrect.

When Dominion Energy first proposed their merger with SCE&G’s parent company, SCANA, the company promised a $1,000 refund for average SCE&G residential electric customers.

That option was later eliminated after the utility provider announced a more significant, long-term decrease to customer bills.

They say the number provided in the scam is the phone number for the court-approved Class Action Administrator.

Calling this phone number lets customers hear an automated message regarding details of a settlement reached in a class action lawsuit concerning the construction of two nuclear units for which SCE&G customers paid costs through their electric bills.

Current and former customers have been provided notice of the settlement through court-approved means.

Customers are cautioned not to provide personal information to anyone in response to such messages or calls.
