NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)- One building in North Charleston now houses two schools under one roof: North Charleston High School and Pattison’s Academy.

Pattison’s Academy provides education for 35 students ages 5-21 with severe disabilities.

Pattison’s Academy Executive Director, Paige Knowlson, says, “They get specialized and intensive specialized education services as well as intensive therapy services while they’re here. They’re able to get their IEP and their outpatient therapy, we have specialized nursing services that partner with MUSC to have some of their routine care needs met while they’re here at school. So that when the family is home, they can focus on being a family at the end of the day.”

Pattison’s Academy is a public charter school, so all of the school’s services are provided at no cost to the parents. Pattison’s Academy is paying the school district a low rent a partial utilities for the wing of the high school which will save money and give them more space.

Knowlson says, “We have more therapy spaces, more classrooms, more office spaces, more treatment spaces, and  tailored for children within our program.”

She adds administrators from the two schools hope to create programs where the students can work together.

Knowlson says, “Our children have a really wonderful opportunity to educate the North Charleston High School students about their needs, their strengths, and all that they can achieve. And our students also have the opportunity to learn from their peers here at North Charleston High School by integrating into some of the music, the art, the gym, typical high school experiences we now have as a resource at our finger tips.”

Pattison’s Academy hopes the close proximity to Park Circle will bring in new partners for volunteering, sponsorships, and community based learning for the students.
