School Spirit 5K supports education in Niger

Local News

JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCBD) – Join the Remember Niger Coalition for the School Spirit Run for Niger on Saturday, November 3rd. The event takes place at James Island County Park. There will be jump castles, food, cupcakes, activities for kids, and a Golds Gym pre-race stretch.

The 5k family friendly run and walk supports local students in the Lowcountry as well as young students in Niger Africa. Local schools and students of all ages are invited to form a team to compete against each other for the two School Spirit Run trophies! Past winners include Murray Lasaine Elementary, Harborview Elementary and Memminger Elementary. Everyone is encouraged to wear their school colors to show unity among dissimilarity. Don’t forget to bring your school principal and vote for him/her to get a pie in the face!

Niger is the least developed country in the world. The goal is to teach local students what it is like to go to school in a country like Niger. The School Spirit Run committee members visit schools across the area and give a 30 minute presentation including lots of photos and video from classrooms in Niger. The program builds compassion and empathy for children across the ocean whose lives are very different from ours.

All proceeds from the event will be used toward the construction of a new elementary school in Niger! Registration is $25 per person and includes a t-shirt and entrance to the park. You can register for the run at www.SchoolSpiritRun.org and visit their Facebook page for more information.
