Seismic testing approved along east coast, SC lawyers working to stop it

Local News

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCBD) – Seismic testing along the east coast has been approved by the Trump administration.

Now, lawyers with the South Carolina Environmental Law Project are trying to stop it.

They plan to ask a federal judge here in Charleston for an injunction by the end of the week.

For now, it appears that five companies will be allowed to start seismic airgun testing from Delaware to Florida.

The test helps reveal fossil fuels below the ocean floor.

A big concern here in South Carolina, though, is old military weapons that were dumped in the ocean decades ago.

A recent study from the American Petroleum Institute estimates offshore drilling would add nearly 300,000 jobs and $23 billion to the U.S. economy every year.
