Several downtown streets close after excavator damages gas line

CHARLESTON, SC (WCBD) – Several downtown streets closed Wednesday after due to a gas leak, according to the City of Charleston Police Department.

Paul Fischer, a spokesperson with SCE&G said crews responded to an emergency call around 2:25 p.m. where a third-party excavator doing work in the area of Logan Street accidentally damaged one of the utility company’s natural gas lines.

Fisher said the line was secured at 4:15 p.m., but crews remained on scene to make final repairs.

Charleston Police said Broad Street was reopened to traffic just before 5:00 p.m.

Logan and Tradd Streets remained closed.

We are told the Charleston Fire Department was also called to the scene.
