Local News

CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCBD) – Charleston County has announced the opening pet-friendly storm shelter due to potential impacts from Hurricane Michael.

The shelter facility will be located at 3765 Leeds Avenue in North Charleston beginning at noon Wednesday.

Officials say those coming to the shelter should bring the following items with them:

  • Bedding such as pillows, blankets, sleeping bags
  • Clothing
  • Medications
  • Emergency kit
  • Your child’s stuffed animal
  • Pet food and medications
  • Any other comfort items you may need

Those who need transportation to the emergency shelter should go to the nearest designated CARTA bus stop. Residents in an unincorporated area with no CARTA stop should go to the nearest Blue Hurricane pick up sign.

Once at the stop, citizens should call 843-202-7904 to request pick up.

Bus service to the shelter will run from noon until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, and again Thursday from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., weather conditions pending.

The American Red Cross will also open a storm shelter at First Baptist Church of Barnwell (161 Allen Street, Barnwell, SC 29812) at 2:00 p.m.

Leaders with the Red Cross say cots will be available at these shelters, but people are urged to bring important medications, pillows, additional blankets, hygiene items and other items for children or anyone with special needs.
