Sheriff pleads for community to assist in solving unsolved murders in Colleton County

COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCBD) — The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office needs the public’s help solving a murder from August 5, 2018.

Deputies say Benjamin Hampleton was shot and killed at a party that night. However, when deputies arrived, the scene was clear, except for Hampleton.

Now, CCSO is handing out pamphlets describing the case and the issues with solving it.

“Trouble I have on this case is we know there were approximately 200 to 300 people on scene as the shooting occurred,” said Colleton County Sheriff R.A. Strickland.

Deputies say they got the call just after midnight about a shooting victim on Ford Lane in the Ritter community. Benjamin “Benji” Hampleton was found shot, and died. Another shooting victim later showed up at the hospital.

In the report, deputies said they responded to the area earlier in the night to find about 200 people for an possible illegal street race. The report says the group then moved to a residence where the shooting happened.

The pamphlet also lists three other unsolved cases with similar circumstances.

The Sheriff says he knows some illegal activity may have occurred prior to the shooting, and he fears that is keeping people from coming forward with details. However, he emphasizes his priority is putting the killer in jail.

“Until the community comes forward, and stands tall … and give the information we need to put the bad guy in jail, it makes our case very difficult,” Strickland said.
