Summerville demonstrates online tools to help residents figure out if they are within town limits

Local News

Homes and businesses with Summerville mailing addresses stretch across Dorchester, Berkeley and Charleston counties but they are not always located within the town’s limits. On Monday, town officials demonstrated some tools it developed to News 2, that show residents and property owners whether or not a property is located in the town.

Some area residents have expressed confusion over who to call for public services like garbage pickup and emergency services.

“We get phone calls from people sometimes who, they have a Summerville zip code but they could live in North Charleston or they have a Summerville zip code and they could live in the county,” said Mary Edwards, the public information officer for the town.

The town created two tools to help out residents: a list of streets and building numbers located within the town and an online mapping tool that allows residents to search an address and determine which municipality or county they’re located within.

“There’s a search bar at the top left and you can search your address in that search box and it will tell you exactly where you are in the town limits, if you’re not in town limits, who your council member is and what district and zoning you’re in,” said Edwards.
