NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – An alternative for training law enforcement across South Carolina could be coming to Trident Technical College.
The school wants to offer a supplemental training program.
If approved, they would provide 11 weeks of training before sending students to the state’s academy for four weeks of hands-on training.
The goal is to free up class space at the academy while graduating more officers.
“Based on our numbers we can do a whole lot more,” said Shawn Livingston Criminal Justice Homeland Security Management with Trident Tech. “They could certify up to 3,000 officers per year. Now they’re certifying about 1,100.”
For now, law enforcement agencies say they wait more than 100 days to place an applicant in the academy.
Training then lasts 12 weeks.
