MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD) – Two students have been charged after getting into a physical altercation at Wando High School on Wednesday.

The students were reportedly at odds over an ongoing issue between Mount Pleasant kids and McClellenville kids, according to one of the students involved in the fight.

School Resource Officers were called to a back patio off the cafeteria around 12:00 p.m. to break the fight up; Mount Pleasant police officers were also called to the school.

When officers arrived, one of the students was being escorted inside by a Student Concern Specialist and was taken to the assistant principal’s office.

A second student was being restrained by staff and had visible injuries to their head and left eye area.

When asked what had taken place, the student explained that as the other student walked outside, they raised their arms and said “what’s up?!?”. The student explained that due to being challenged earlier in the week, they took it to mean they wanted to fight right then.

The student approached and pushed the second student and both “locked up,” according to officers. One threw the other to the ground and punched them several times in the head before they were broken up by school staff.

Due to injuries resulting from the fight, one of the students was transported via EMS to East Cooper Medical Center for evaluation.

One student has been charged with second-degree assault and battery while the other is charged with disorderly conduct for being a willing participant in the altercation.
