CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Visitation services are in order for former Cooper River Bridge Run Director Julian Smith. This is happening Wednesday at the James A McAlister Funeral Home from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.
For those who were lucky enough to know Julian, you’d know he had quite the mustache. This year’s Bridge Run committee is deciding to do something special in honor of Julian. They’re putting down the razors and asking you to do the same, and grow out your mustache.
“So we’re all trying to grow mustaches because you know, that was his signature thing,” Irv Batten, Cooper River Bridge Run Deputy Race Director said. “He always had that mustache no matter what. I think he had it, he started growing that mustache when he was 15, and he had one ever since, so.”
This year’s committee said they don’t plan to honor this year’s race in Julian’s name because it’s something he wouldn’t have wanted.
“He liked to keep things, you know, focus on the race, focus on the race, not on me,” Batten said. “So, we’re going to honor that and we’re going to focus on the race and put on a great event for him.”
Wednesday’s visitation services will be followed by a celebration of life. This is happening at the Hibernian Hall from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.
