CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Two drivers stopped a woman after they saw her hit a bicyclist and try to speed away.
24-year-old Kacey Jay is charged with DUI and a drug violation following what the police report says was a hit and run involving an SUV and a bicycle. No injuries were reported.
Tuesday night around 8:30, officers were called to the intersection of Meeting and Calhoun in downtown Charleston. While police were on the way, they got a call from a citizen saying he’d stopped the car at the intersection of Calhoun and King.
Jay was sitting on a bench at Marion Square when officers arrived. They noticed damage to the driver side of her vehicle. She was arrested after failing field sobriety tests.Her blood alcohol content was .24.
A bag containing a white powder was later found in Jay’s wallet and sent for testing.
Witnesses of the stop say seeing two citizen stop Jay in the street then take her keys was impressive.
“It was a pretty brave act to stop that car. I don’t know if they knew who was in there or what they were dealing with, but I was impressed that one of the citizens that stopped that vehicle had the presence of mind to grab her keys,” said Jamie Horwitz.
As Jay’s breath sample tested above .15, she was immediately issued a notice of suspension and her license was confiscated.
