SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCBD) – Summerville resident Rhea Spencer celebrated her 100th birthday by flying high over Flowertown in a helicopter.

The Village at Summerville and Holy City Helicopters arranged to fly Spencer and other residents of the retirement community around the town on Thursday.

Joseph Shakespeare, the concierge at the Village of Summerville, arranged the flight for Spencer and often coordinates events and special birthday celebrations for residents at the community.

“It just came up,” said Spencer. “Joey said we were going to have a helicopter and I said I’m with it.”

Flights took off throughout the day from a field near the community on West 9th North Street and residents saw aerial views of Dorchester and Berkeley Counties and sites including Downtown Summerville and I-26.

Shakespeare said the community may celebrate Spencer’s 101st birthday with a hot air ballon ride.

“It’s overwhelmed” said Spencer but she added “I enjoyed every minute of it.”
