NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCBD) — A Virginia man visiting North Charleston for work says he had to head home early because he suffered from several bed bug bites.

Jose Gonzalez and his nephew were in town to work on a renovation to a North Charleston hotel. He says he checked into the Econolodge hotel on Northside Drive last Monday.

“The next morning when we wake up, when we turned the light on, it was like ants all over the place,” said Gonzalez.

Gonzalez says he left a day early to return to his home in Richmond, VA.

“I can’t work. It’s itching so much. I have to take showers every couple hours,” he said.

Gonzalez complained to hotel staff. They told him they would refund his money.

When the I-Team contacted the Econolodge, staff said pest control did visit the hotel after the complaint. Staff members say they have refunded part of Gonzalez’s money, and they plan to return the rest once they receive the pest control report.

Additionally, hotel staff says they take bed bugs very seriously. The room in which Gonzalez stayed was rented out the following night without complaint.
