Man involved in officer-involved shooting died from self-inflicted gunshot wound

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The Charleston County Coroner’s Office has released the identity of the person involved in an officer-involved shooting on Friday, August 26.

According to Coroner Rae H. Wooten, Christian Joshua Olivencia, 29, died from “a fatal wound to the head which is consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

At about 11:30 p.m. Friday, North Charleston Police Department responded to a report of a man shooting a gun outside of an apartment building on Dunlap street.

Authorities say after leaving the building in a vehicle and coming back to the apartment complex, Olivencia pulled in front the apartment building and bailed from the car. Officers chased after him as he entered the breezeway of the building  where, we’re told, Olivencia fired a gun at the officers.  The officers then returned fire.

North Charleston Police, North Charleston Fire, and Charleston County EMS all responded to the incident.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is continuing to investigate.
