Charleston, S.C.-Police say a mother shot her child and then shot herself. On Thursday, we learned that the child is only 3-years-old. The woman died, but as of Thursday August 11th, the child is still alive.

This terrible event happened on Lyttleton Avenue. The neighborhood is about a half mile from the Coburg Cow in West Ashley.

We talked to a handful of neighbors who all said about the same thing-that they did not know the family very well because they had just moved in about a month ago. One neighbor told News 2, he saw all the police cars outside the house and then later learned what happened.

Police documents say, City of Charleston Police officers responded to a call on Monday August 8th around 5:30PM about a suicide involving a 35-year-old woman. When they got there, officers also found a 3-year-old boy with an apparent gunshot wound. Medics took the child to MUSC.

We do not know the boy’s condition, but Coroner Rae Wooten says no one has reached out to her about the child. Therefore, we can conclude the boy is still alive as she would be the one to confirm otherwise.

The neighbors we talked to have the same questions we do about how the boy is doing. We will update this article if we get any information about his condition.
