Measles Outbreak: Nearly 700 confirmed cases reported in the U.S.

Nation & World

WASHINGTON (WCBD) – There are nearly 700 confirmed cases of measles reported in the United States.

That means there are more infected people right now than the U.S. has seen in 25 years.

The World Health Organization reported this month measles cases are up 300-percent worldwide compared to the first three months of 2018.

According to the Department of Health and Environmental Control, there is no reported case in South Carolina this year.

“Twenty years ago we did say it was eradicated and because of the lack of vaccination in a small group of people, we are now seeing it again,” said Dr. Aujatha Reddy, a medical expert.

The Centers for Disease Control says most cases stem from a few large outbreaks including those in Washington state and New York.
