Sen. Lindsey Graham tours Golan Heights region with Israel’s prime minster

WASHINGTON (WCBD) – Senator Lindsey Graham promised to start an effort in the U.S. to recognize Golan Heights as part of Israel.

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Senator Graham and U.S. Ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, toured the Golan Heights region on Monday.

During that trip, Sen. Graham praised the allied relationship between the United States and Israel.

Netanyahu and Friedman urged the U.S. to recognize the region as part of Israel.

“I will go back to the United States Senate. Working with Senator Cruz, I will start an effort to recognize the Golan as part of the State of Israel now and forever,” said Sen. Graham.
“Because to give this territory up would be a strategic nightmare for the State of Israel and who would you give it to?”

The rocky plateau has political and strategic significance, and is a source of conflict between Israel and Syria.

Israel unilaterally annexed the Golan Heights in 1981.

The move was not recognized internationally.
