Today, members of the National Action Network held a news conference in Jamestown to request the resignation of Police Chief John High.
High made comments online that NAN leaders say make him unfit to serve in law enforcement.
Earlier this week, Jamestown Police Chief John High made the comment to Lainey Sanders on Facebook, “What’s that saying? Once you go black, you’re a single mom?”
The National Action Network’s Elder James Johnson said they want swift action taken. “We feel in the community that it has no place in law-enforcement. So NAN itself is asking for Mr. Jay High’s resignation… we tried to address the Mayor with these issues, but I understand he is out of town.”
Johnson said he is going to talk to SLED about a possible investigation of Jamestown.
Willie Felder is the President of the Berkeley County chapter of NAN. “How can the citizens of Jamestown feel comfortable when you’re pulled over by a cop that can make comments like that?”
Chief High stopped by town hall during the news conference. We asked him if he was going to step down. He told us that threats have been made against him, and lawsuits may be filed, so he is not commenting anymore at this time.
Sanders also attended the news conference. “A lot of people have been threatening me, telling me, ‘I hope you get shot.’ But I also had a lot of positive feedback from a lot of people.”
She agrees with NAN. “I would love for him to be forced to resign.”
Wendell Padgett lives in Jamestown. “Personally, I have never had a problem with the chief, but I have had some complaints from citizens of Jamestown… We need to take action and take action soon. I don’t know if it’ll lead to termination, but it definitely needs to be followed up as recommended. So far as maybe counseling and time off without pay for that counseling”
The National Action Network says they plan to be at Tuesday night’s council meeting, and they also plan to hold a meeting of their own in Jamestown in the near future.
