Two giraffes at a park in Florida were just confirmed to have been killed by lightning last month.
Lion Country Safari in Palm Beach County said it happened during a storm about six weeks ago.
Park officials say 1-year-old Jioni and 10-year-old Lily, a male and a female giraffe, were killed by a lightning strike.
The safari has a lightning detection system and when the storm rolled through officials opened the animal shelter area, which is standard protocol.
But, it’s up to the animals whether they want to seek shelter or stay out in the open.
Lion Country Safari is now reviewing its policies and procedures, and has been in contact with other experts throughout the state of Florida.
