Charlotte-area high school student dies following early morning shooting

UPDATE: 10:30AM — Television station WNCN has confirmed the student involved in that shooting has passed away from their injuries.


MATTHEWS, SC (WCBD) – One person is in custody and another was left injured following an early morning shooting at a North Carolina high school.

The shooting happened just after 7:00 a.m. at Butler High School in Matthews.

An official with the Matthew’s Police Department confirmed the suspect was in custody and believed it was an isolated incident.

The victim was taken to an area hospital for treatment, but the extent of their injuries are currently unknown.

A heavy police presence could be seen at the school Monday and the scene was quickly secured by law enforcement.

Dozens of worried parents gathered to await word. Law enforcement officials said information on releasing students to their parents would be forthcoming.
