RICHMOND, VA – A Virginia elementary school is serving a daily dose of inspiration for its students… through fruit.
Each day, the lunch ladies write positive messages on bananas for their students.
“Anytime you can have a positive environment in a school you know great things can happen from that and they took this and ran with it,” said principal Chip Joseph, Beaverdam Elementary School.
This isn’t the first time the lunch bunch has written messages on fruit.
They say the idea came from a former employee last year who wanted to do something to inspire students.
“It’s everything. It’s everything here at school. Everyone here is just lovely and sweet and kind and we promote kindness,” said lunch lady, Jennifer Reed.
And those are the kinds of messages your see on these bananas.
You are great — You are special — You are awesome.
“Immediate smiles,” said Joseph. “Who wouldn’t smile when you’re being told you’re awesome and terrific, outstanding. That’s a great thing.”
But Reed has also thrown in an educational aspect to these messages – big words like marvelous and magnificent.
“Which was funny because some of the younger kids didn’t know what those words meant, but we explained it and we had a good time explaining it,” said Reed.
And while students can face a lot of challenges these days, the lunch ladies and administrators hope these bananas will peel away the negativity and focus on the positive.
“I believe it’s the little things that count the most,” said Joseph. “There are always negative factors that come with any situation but when you have enough positive things going on I think you can overcome almost anything.”
