Officials advise South Carolinians to be aware of scams after Matthew

CHARLESTON, SC (WCBD) — The South Carolina Department of Emergency Management put out a warning to homeowners affected by Hurricane Matthew.

Officials say many service workers will be out to perform work on damaged homes from the storm. Officials offer the following tips when someone comes on your property:

-Always ask for proper identification

-Note that no service worker will ask for personal or financial information. Do not give out your social security number or other identifying information.

-If a service worker makes you feel unsafe, contact authorities or call 911.

Residents also need to thoroughly research any contractors hired to rebuild or repair their home. You should check to make sure the individual has the proper license and permits to perform the work.
